Q : What is the difference between a wall bed, a Murphy bed, and a fold-down bed?
Regardless of the French term used—escamotable, mural, rabattable, encastré, or repliable—they are all synonymous!
In English, the term "Murphy bed" is often used. Historically, the "Murphy" is named after its American inventor, Mr. William L. Murphy. It can also be referred to as a "wall bed," "pull-down bed," or "fold-down bed." This type of bed can fit into all kinds of rooms. Whether it’s for a child’s bedroom, a boudoir, or from the attic to the basement, you just need to find the perfect model to suit your needs. We can create projects for beds: single, double, queen, and even king size. Note that the king size is available with an electric mechanism or the Vancouver Murphy system only. |
Q: What mattress should be used for a Murphy bed?
Each mattress available on the market has different components and purposes. Of course, it's meant for sleeping! But there’s more...
Some so-called "conventional" mattresses may work in our beds. However, it’s important to consider:
The mattresses we sell are custom-made in Quebec and have the perfect specifications for this type of bed! We offer several complete ranges of different mattresses. During your visit to our store, you’ll be able to try out the comfort that suits you best. From a softer mattress to a very firm one, there’s something for everyone. |
Q: Safety Perspective!
Murphy beds are very safe.
Whether it’s the beds, cabinets, desks, overhead storage, or wardrobes, everything is thoughtfully designed and securely fastened to the walls. We use very high-quality materials and proven frameworks.
During installations, our team of professionals will take the time to properly set up your project. Everything will be leveled for stability and safety.
Does the installation make holes in your walls? Yes, because your bed needs to be anchored to the wall. However, we ensure that everything is installed in the studs to minimize holes. Quality brackets also secure the modules.
We also install in concrete walls with anchors specifically made for concrete.

Q: Can you leave sheets and pillows on the bed when it’s closed?
One of the main goals of a Murphy bed is to be easy to use on a daily basis! What could be better than not having to make your bed every morning?!
Our bed boxes are specially designed to frame the mattresses well while leaving a safe space on each side, allowing you to leave your sheets, duvet, and bedspread on the bed when you close it. You just need to tuck any overhanging covers under the mattress to ensure it closes properly. For pillows, some very thick ones may create resistance when closing the bed. Every pillow is different! However, in most cases, pillows do not cause any issues and can be left on the bed at all times. If you wish, we can add a pillow box, designed for storing pillows, which will be installed at the back/wall of your Murphy bed. |
Q: Mechanisms
We generally work with several types of mechanisms: the spring mechanism and the piston mechanism. Various options are available for the spring mechanism, including the famous "Murphy Bed."
Other mechanisms can also be offered, such as those with removable shelves, sofas in front, or even electric options. A brand-new model of a bunk bed will also be available soon.

Spring Mechanism
This Italian mechanism features two white boxes containing springs. When the bed is closed, the springs are at rest. Once the bed is opened, the springs are fully extended. That's why it's strongly recommended to close the bed when not in use. In addition to the very strong springs, the bed is supported by retractable chrome metal legs. Everything is well framed by a solid melamine box that encases the mattress. This mechanism is very robust and can support up to 600 lbs.

Murphy Vancouver Mechanism
The "Murphy" mechanism is named after its creator, William L. Murphy, who conducted his first experiments with wall beds in the early 1900s.
It features a spring mechanism, a reinforced MDF base (box spring), and a black metal frame. This mechanism stands out for its lightweight design, requiring only one large leg to operate. This mechanism is one of the few that can be used for a very large bed (King size). |
Removable Shelf Mechanism
This Italian-imported mechanism gives your bed a second purpose.
Whether for a small desk or decorative shelves, with this mechanism, there's no need to clear off your desk before sleeping! Everything can stay on the shelves even when the bed is open.
For this type of Murphy bed, the base is made of wooden slats, and the mattress must be secured.

Module Depth
The great thing about custom solutions is that we can create modules for almost any depth!
However, the depth of the beds is standard. Essentially, we work with three depths. Here are the characteristics of each, which might influence your choice:

SOFAS
COLORS AND STYLES
Whether for a living room, lounge, or even an open loft, it’s possible to add a sofa to your Murphy bed.
We offer custom sofas, loveseats, or couches in an incredible variety of colors and textures, all made by a Quebec company.
For this wonderful option, it’s always best to choose the 20'' deep bed model. Since this model is higher, it will be easier to manipulate the loveseat when you open the bed.
